“Spending decades as a smoker did Dad no favors. As his sickness progressed, it became harder and harder for him to swallow. For him, I think that was the worst part of his illness. He could handle pain and discomfort, but the prospect of not being able to eat chili and cornbread was too much for him to bear. Not being able to swallow pills didn’t help either, and he didn’t want an IV to deliver nutrition and water. I had no idea that a speech therapist could help with that, but she did. She visited Dad and worked with him until they found the best posture for him to eat in. With that knowledge, we could help him enjoy his favorite foods for the rest of his time on Earth.”
